Hear Here disbanded due to the ill health of some members and the small size of the group. I apologize for not posting an official notice at the time. It has taken me this long to catch up!

It is particularly sad that we had to end our association as the Children's testing program was really taking off. Late as it is I would like to thank all our sponsors, schools and volunteers that helped make this such a successful program. I have been asked is there another organization that offers mobile hearing screening in Yolo County and unfortunately there is not. We know the need is still there and if anyone or organization is interested in how we arranged the service you may contact us by writing to:
Again thank you to everyone we worked with...especially Norma and her crew...we miss you guys!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8875963836446824047.post-66201014883957582452013-04-10T12:52:00.000-07:002013-04-10T12:52:21.952-07:00Preschool Screening UpdateThe 2013 Preschool Screening Tests are almost completed!
So far we have tested 427 preschool aged children of which 21 did not pass the screening. We have one more school to test with about 40 preschoolers and so our final figures won't be in till the end of next week. Once again the two technicians from the Center for Hearing Health, Norma and Marta, have done a wonderful job with screening the children. They certainly help make this program run smoothly and efficiently.

Follow Up
The new voucher system, allowing parents to take their children to Sutter ENT for a complete audiological examination by Dr. Sue Hodell, has been implemented and seems to be successful. We should have the final numbers for how many children received a follow up sometime in May. This is such a significant addition to the program that we really hope to be able to offer it again, funds permitting.
If a child cannot hear you they cannot; follow
instructions correctly, respond appropriately, or communicate fully. Children, especially young children, often
are not aware that they missing words or sounds and therefore meaning. As a result, children with even a slight
hearing impediment experience difficulties not just with their listening skills
but also their language skills, their relationships with family, teachers and
friends and they often become socially withdrawn and sometimes are even labeled
slow learners. These issues, if left undetected, may lead to long-term social,
emotional, behavioral and learning issues for the child. Children with a
hearing impediment often fall behind grade before they even start school.

As part of their mission to provide
support to the hearing impaired of Yolo County, Hear! Here!, the Woodland Chapter of Hearing
Loss Association of America, has scheduled over 475 children to be screened for
possible hearing loss during the last two weeks of March. Testing will be done
by trained personnel from the Center for Hearing Health, in specially equipped mobile
vans.

Mel Russell, one of the coordinators of the program says “It is my believe that the earlier a child’s hearing loss is detected allowing for support to be provided; be it hearing aids, speech therapy, social or emotional guidance, the more chance that child has to lead a successful, well rounded life. If we identify even one preschool aged child that needs help with their hearing hopefully we have helped ensure that child a brighter future.”

Funds for the screening were raised with generous donations from the Soroptimists International of Davis and the Woodland Sunrise Rotary Foundation. A grant from First 5 Yolo and more efficient routing and beneficial pricing during our 2012 testing allowed us to add these additional schools to our schedule. In total we will have tested close to 1000 preschool children during the last year.

NEW THIS YEAR: This year, thanks to the staff at Sutter Medical Foundation, ENT department and audiologist, Sue Holdell, Hear! Here! is also offering a full audiology examination to the children that fail the basic screening test. We are excited to be able to ensure that families will be able to follow up the screening with a full diagnostic test. Not all children who fail the screenings have a permanent hearing loss; it is so important to identify those that do so they can get the help they need.
The chapter will be looking at new leadership and goals for the year when the Advisory Board meets in February. If anyone is interested in participating in this meeting please contact us by e-mail at: hearherewoodland@gmail.com and we will provide the time, location and other details of the meeting when they are finalised.

In the meantime, the chapter will hold its January meeting as usual...see side bar for details, and the Preschool Hearing Program is scheduling more screenings for preschoolers in March of this year. Watch the blogsite for more details.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8875963836446824047.post-32589161588656674252012-08-23T14:07:00.000-07:002012-08-23T14:07:37.403-07:00September 2012 Meeting: "Hearing Impaired at the Hospital"Missing information when talking to a doctor or nurse can not only be frustrating but also potentially life threatening. Medicine dosages, conflicts with other drugs and schedules for taking the medicine all need to be heard and understood clearly. What do you do when you go to a medical appointment? What can you do to make sure you have heard and understood instructions properly? How do you ensure that the doctor has heard and understood YOU!
Come to our September meeting and hear what advice Colette Noble from NorCal Services for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing has to offer on "Hearing Impaired at the Hospital".
Our meeting will be on SEPTEMBER 20th, at 10.00 am at the Davis Senior Center located at 646 A Street, Davis. This week additional preschoolers, in both the Davis and the Winters area, were screened for possible hearing loss. The efforts of Hear! Here! to reach more children this year has resulted in an overall increase in children being tested. Mel Russell, one of the coordinators says that so far around 400 preschoolers have been screened with three more schools to be tested. She says that the screening have gone very well so far with no major hitches.

Scheduling this year was harder because of the increase in the number of schools and because many of the schools requested the same day and/or time frame for the screenings; but with the help and flexibility of the Center for Hearing Health technicians and the willingness on the part of schools to accommodate some changes it has all worked out.

Next Thursday will see end of the screenings for this year.

The success of the screenings owe a great deal to the community funding we received and the encouragement this gave to the small group of volunteers that run the program.
First 5 Yolo, The Woodland Sunrise Rotary Foundation and the Davis Soroptimists; all have made the screenings possible.
Although Hear! Here! did not receive any designated funding for Knights Landing the co-coordinators of the Preschool Screening program, Mel Russell and Donna Seaver, both agreed that this was the year to start including this rural town in the testing. They felt it was important that the health needs of the more isolated communities of the county should be met whenever possible. The Advisory Board of Hear! Here! agreed with them and as a result 21 Knights Landing preschoolers aged 4 and 5, had their hearing screened for signs of any hearing impairment.
The number of schools tested increased to 5 preschools this year, located throughout the city. Each preschool that joins in Hear! Here!'s screening project have to designate a teacher or teacher's aide to be responsible for gathering the children to be tested and making sure that they make it into the van and then back to their classroom. The testing takes anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes per group, depending on the number and age of the children in the van. Here two of the designated teachers/aides from the Woodland College Child Development Center wait outside the van. Hear! Here!'s volunteers help in ensuring the safety of the children as they enter and leave the van...as well as providing the "GOOOOD JOBS" and "HIGH FIVES" necessary to make the day FUN!

The mobile van of the Center for Hearing Loss visited the town of Winters today. Two schools were included in the screenings and a total of 62 children were tested. For the first time I sat in the van during some of the testing and it was very interesting to see how Norma and Lucia, the two technicians, worked with the preschoolers.
The children were screened in groups of 5. As they took their places in the van they gave their name to Norma. Lucia then showed each child where to sit and explained that they were going to be putting on the ear phones and having a hearing test. She then gave them the directions "When you hear a sound you need to put your hand up right away. Then put it down when the sound goes away." Before doing the actual screening she had the children try it out first without headphones and then a couple of times with the headphones on. Some of the children treated this part as a race trying desperately to be the first one to have their hands up! This in part explained why, when the children do the actual screenings, they have to have their eyes closed. The other reason is to prevent a child from just copying the person next to them, which is very natural behaviour in 4 and 5 year olds. It was quite funny to see 5 children sitting there with their eyes closed...some had them squeezed oh oh so very tight and others barely had their eyelids touching down! Lucia was able to make sure though that eyes were shut when needed.
With Norma helping they then took the children through the sounds, testing each ear for 3 different frequencies. If a child was having problems following the directions Norma would help by gently prompting them with the instructions again with such patience. If a child seemed to be having problems hearing then Lucia repeated the sounds and also added another frequency to the mix, making sure they had every opportunity to respond.
As it happened one of the schools also had a number of 3 year olds in the class whom we also tested. Because they are younger and cannot focus for as long as 4 and 5 year olds, Norma had only 3 children come into the van at a time. Lucia adapted the test by screening each child one at a time as trying to listen and put their hands up at the same time is just a little too complex for 3 year olds.
The atmosphere was relaxed and some of the children were shouting "That was fun!" as they left the van...showing off their stickers as they went!
A grant of $4650.00 from First 5 Yolo along with a donation of $2,500.00 from the Woodland Sunrise Rotary Foundation also allowed Hear! Here to increase the number of schools scheduled for testing in Woodland, as well as to include Knights Landing preschool for the first time. In addition all the established preschools in Winters and Esparto are scheduled for testing. The hearing screenings will take place between now and May 17th.

Good hearing is critical in the process of children learning to speak and to read. The hearing screenings that the Center of Hearing Health provide allow the teachers and parents of children identified with a hearing loss to take steps to ensure that the children receive the support they need to be successful in school and in the world.
The meeting of Hearing Loss
Association of America (Hear! Here!), at 10 a.m. on March 26 at Woodland
Community and Senior Center, will be of
interest to a wide range of people concerned with hearing loss in children. Hear!
Here! is dedicated to diagnosing if a child in preschool has a possible hearing loss in order to give
them a better chance of learning when entering elementary school. Parents and teachers of preschool children can
easily overlook a hearing loss because the disability is not readily evident and sometimes is only
found with a hearing test.

Children need to be able to hear,
because hearing affects language and speech development, social and emotional
well-being, and academic achievement. Parents and teachers are often unaware of
a child’s loss of hearing until the child receives a hearing test in public elementary
school. Private elementary schools seldom provide hearing tests.

Hear! Here! has an annual program
to provide free hearing tests to preschool children in Yolo County, ages 4 and
5, to alert parents to a possible hearing loss. The Hear! Here! meeting will
explain details of the local group’s program and describe, with illustrations,
the process of arranging for tests at preschools, the licensed testing company,
the source of funding, and the opportunity for volunteers to participate in screening
children for hearing loss before they enter elementary school.
On Monday January 23rd. at the Woodland Hear! Here! meeting, Lindsay Visocchi of Hamilton Relay Service demonstrated the Captioned Telephone (Hamilton CapTel) which allows individuals who have difficulty hearing on the phone to speak directly to the other party as usual, then listen and read the other party's response as captions appear on a built-in display screen. A specially trained operator generates the captions so there is a very slight delay between the spoken conversation and what is displayed. The service is free to those that qualify through the California Telephone Access Program [see May 11th, 2011 blog for more on CTAP]. The service is only available to California residents.

This technology:

Eliminates the struggle of using the phone due to difficulty hearing

Allows for natural conversations

Provides a truly interactive calling experience

Gives an increased sense of independence

Makes the phone your friend again

"Clear, accurate, real time conversations link you to the world, to business, to family, to friends" said Lindsay. "You can talk naturally, there is no need to use short sentences...the only thing you need to be aware of is not to use slang or other words not found in a common dictionary" The phone has all the standard features one has come to expect on a hard of hearing phone such as adjustable amplifications, speed dial, phone book and caller ID capability.

Lindsay also showed us how the the Hamilton Web CapTel works.

This service which requires access to the Internet:

Allows the user to see every word the caller says right on their computer screen.

Requires no special equipment other than a computer

Does not require you to download any special software

Is available at no charge

You can use it where ever you can get Internet service along with phone service by simply dialing a 1-800 number to receive incoming calls

Lindsay explained that a simple, one-time registration is the only requirement to use the service. This web-based captioning seemed very interesting to me for people who use the Internet a lot...I thought it might be easier to use than the captioning phone as the screen you would be looking at would be larger. I liked this service a lot.

Hamilton Web CapTel account holders can also receive captioning on select mobile phone. A benefit of the mobile captioning, Hamilton Mobile CapTel, is:

It can be used anywhere, in the USA, that your phone works with a phone that has 3G capability or wifi that supports phone and data simultaneously

Requires no special equipment but a hands free head set is recommended for best results

Is totally mobile

There is no charge for the service

Lindsay demonstrated the Mobile service by phoning Hear! Here! advisory board member Mel Russell [me] on her mobile. As we spoke to each other on our smart phones captions were displayed on the screen. This looked like it could be really useful when making important telephone calls where you need to get accurate information and, or while you are on the road. As Lindsay showed us "...you can immediately connect with anyone, anywhere, anytime!"

We want to say thanks to Lindsay for an informative and fun demonstration and for sharing with us all this rather cool technology.

to be used for its 2012 Preschool Hearing Program.

First 5 Yolo's Mission Statement "First 5 Yolo will assist our community to raise children who are healthy and ready to learn" led Hear! Here! to believe that the hearing program might be a perfect candidate for grant funds. The hearing program arranges for children 4 & 5 years of age to take a hearing test designed to identity any hearing impediment that the child may have.

Research shows that children with hearing loss may have problems with:

Grades in School

Language Skills

Social Skills

Self-esteem

Relationships with Peers

Relationships with Family

Emotional Health

In California, after birth, most children are not tested until they enter school at age 6. This program aims at catching a hearing loss early enough to give the child a chance of not falling behind before they have even started school.

"The grant is particularly important to us, said Mel Russell one of the coordinators of the project, as the goal for this year's program is to increase the testing to 500 children which is a significant increase for the program. 2011 saw 361 children take part in the hearing screenings, with 347 completing the test of which 17 failed. We estimate that this year the cost of testing one child will be about $8.50. The monies from the grant will go directly to the agency that performs the tests for us...we still need more funds if we are to make our goal of testing 500 children; providing information to the schools and parents; and providing follow up...but the grant has us well on our way. We have been very fortunate in the past to receive help from many of the local service organizations, such as the Lions, the Kiwanis, and the Soroptimists. However, the scope of this year's project required a significant early infusion of funds and we are so pleased that First 5 recognized the value of our project and chose to support it."

Donna Seaver the other coordinator for this year's project said "Testing will be in the first week of May and site visits and scheduling of schools will begin soon. If you are interested in volunteering on this project you may leave a message at [530] 756-5536 and either Mel, or I will be in contact with you. We will be visiting schools in Davis, Esparto, Winters and Woodland. Schools interested in being included in the program may call the same number".

The program is still accepting donations, both from organizations and individuals. If you would like to donate to the program you may mail a check to:
Here!'s November meeting offers all our members an opportunity to think about and share the challenges associated with "Surviving the Holidays With Hearing Loss". It is also an excellent opportunity for spouses, parents, other family members, and friends to explore the issues of sharing the Holiday Season with someone who has a hearing loss. Some of the topics to be discussed are:

How to prepare for traveling

How to be a good host at family dinners

Hearing better in noisy situations

What to do when you can't take anymore

Finding Holiday Joy

Solutions for deaf children

This will be an open meeting with informal seating giving everyone plenty of opportunity to share their own experiences and issues. All are encouraged to attend.

The meeting will be held on at 10.00am,Thursday, November 17th. at the Davis Senior Center located at 646 A Street, Davis. Refreshments will be served.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8875963836446824047.post-66245659403248303872011-10-27T13:15:00.000-07:002011-10-27T13:16:16.594-07:00LOOPING-communicating without external equipment!Julia Tanner, Doctorate in Audiology, spoke at the September Hear! Here! general meeting held in Davis on the subject of "looping". Looping is a system of wiring a room or designated area so that wearers of hearing aids with a T Coil option can switch to that setting and receive a clear audio signal free of outside noise. The system does not require the hearer to wear any external equipment and with 60% of hearing aids having a T Coil looping is a very attractive choice for many. The system works very well in lecture halls, churches and other large venues while in Europe many personal service areas such as banks, cashier areas and ticket offices offer looping for individual member of the public. Clare Childers, a member of Hear! Here!, first experienced looping at a conference and rated the system highly as she was able to hear the speaker very, very clearly. A rare experience for Clare with other hearing assisted systems.
Dr. Tanner informed the audience that the system is not really designed to facilitate group conversations although some hearing aids allow the wearer to have a microphone in use at the same time. However, because of its ability to improve the quality of sound and of word discrimination looping is especially useful for television viewing allowing the hard of hearing viewer to adjust the sound to a level that works for them while allowing other viewers to have the sound set lower, as well as in the lecture hall.

There was a short test at the meeting of a temporary looping system that was set up around the edge of the audience followed by an opportunity to discuss individual questions with both Dr. Tanner and her regular installer. Installation for a TV system usually runs around $250.00 and the looping is installed in such a manner as not to be noticeable.

Dr. Tanner told the group that she believes so strongly in looping that she offers it to all her private patients and she is working on a long term project to get as many public meeting venues located in the Sacramento Area looped. Currently two churches are looped, Holy Spirit on Land Park Drive, and Fremont Presbyterian on H Street. If you are a member of a church or organization that may benefit from installing a looping system or if you have a venue in Davis that you would like to suggest to Dr. Tanner you may contact her at: hearingsolution@sbcglobal.net. Thursday morning's Story Time program for 3 to 5 year olds [at 10.15am], and the 11 am Mother Goose on the Loose for 12-36 month old children are interpreted for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. What a great way to ensure a love of reading for all children. I am also sure some of the younger children are learning to sign just by seeing it done each week!
Ms. Miller covered about 10 different phones currently offered to California Residents through the CA Telephone Access Program [CTAP]. The phones cover a variety of needs for people who have difficulty seeing, hearing, speaking, remembering or moving. Even though there was a lot of information available about the phones Love still managed to made it very easy to understand the differences between the various phones that are now available.

Some of the features offered on the phones were:

Volume Control

Tone Control [making the sounds clearer]

Amplification

Speaker phones

External Bell [can be placed so when the phone rings it can be heard]

Cordless

Lit Keys

Ring Alert [flashes so you know the phone is ringing]

Pager [beeps so you can locate the phone if it is not on its cradle]

Memory Dials

Talk Back [Vision-tells you what number you have dialed]

Big Buttons [Vision-Arthritis-Parkinson's]

LED screen that displays the words been said by the other party [godsend to those that miss words over the phone]

These specialized telephones and devices are free to qualified individuals and are available through local CTAP Service Centers. Ms. Miller emphasised that selection of the right kind of phone was essential for customer satisfaction. There are three easy steps to file for a phone:

Complete the application [available on the web-site address below] providing your name and address and contact information

Have the second part of the application form completed by an authorized certified agent [MD, Audiologist, Hearing Aid Dispenser amongst others]

Mail, Fax or bring the form into the Service Center nearest you [see below for the Sacramento Center's Information].

If mailing or faxing in the information allow a week before contacting the Center. You will then be asked some questions over the phone to determine which is the right phone for you. If you bring the application into the center yourself then staff will help you test the phones. The Service Centers and all their staff members are committed to helping you try out and test the phones ahead of time so you end up with the phone you really need. There is rarely a wait and the help is one to one...so important when hearing is an issue!

The cost of this program is covered by a small surcharge that all telephone users in California pay as part of their telephone bill and anyone who needs one should be aware of and make use of this excellent program.

Ms. Miller also pointed out that if you have had a phone through the program for any length of time you may want to look at the newer models, it may be time trade in for an upgrade.

These phones definitely make it easier to hear, to dial and to stay connected. Thanks Love for making this a very interesting and useful presentation!
These phones offer different features such as big buttons, picture dialing, speech assistance, amplification and captioning. They are designed to make the telephone easier to use, by making it easier hear, easier to dial and easier to call. They are used by people with seeing, speaking and moving problems as well as people with a hearing loss.

The telephones are provided to all those that need them free of charge under the State of California's Public Utilities Commission Deaf and Disabled Telecommunications Program. This is a great opportunity to learn about what is currently available to all qualified residents of California through this State funded program. These machines can dramatically improve your communication and help you stay connected to your family members, friends, business partners and everyday contacts. Inform the Court before you Go!"Windy and Rainy as it was on Thursday Febuary 17th, Kara Clarkson and Julie Burton from Yolo County Superior Court came to the Davis Senior Center and talked to us about the services the courts offer to the hard of hearing. While, California Rules of Court, rule 1.100(g) requires that the court accommodates people with disabilities; Kara, the Interpreter Services Coordinator, emphasised that Yolo County Superior Court staff were dedicated to ensuring that qualified persons with disabilities, such as a hearing impediment, be provided with equal and full access to the courts. "This is a fundamental right." stated Kara at the beginning of her talk. "Let us know what you need so we can accommodate you to the best of our abilities."
Using a microphone system similar to the LISTEN system that the courts use for Assisted Listening, everyone in the room was able to hear Kara loud and clear as she proceeded to describe the three different accommodations currently available to the hearing impaired. They are:

ASSISTED LISTENING DEVICES

REAL TIME TRANSCRIPTION and

AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE

ASSISTED LISTENING DEVICES work with the microphones that are situated in the courtrooms at the judge's, attorney's and clerk's desks. The sound is transmitted to a handheld device which the hearing impaired person is given. Each courtroom, including small claims, traffic and family court, have about four of these devices and they can simply be requested from the bailiff at the time you attend court.

REAL TIME TRANSCRIPTION is provided by a court reporter who types what is being said into a computer, where a program then displays the words onto a small screen which the hearing impaired person has in front of them. It takes quite some skill to be able to type, accurately, as fast as a person can talk and so this service has to be requested ahead of time. The service is normally available for Jury service or if the hearing impaired person is either a Defendant or a Plaintiff. Clare Childers, Hear Here's Coordinator spoke very highly of this service which she has actually used. At the moment there are only two court reporters who provide real time transcription and so both Kara and Julie mentioned how, in order to avoid scheduling problems, it was critical that this service be arranged for ahead of time. The form needed to request the accommodation is available at the courthouse or at their website: http://www.yolo.courts.ca.gov/.

AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE interpreters are also available when requested ahead of time using the same form.

At the moment English is the only language available for all three of the systems. Julie, the ADA coordinator for the Superior Court, mentioned that the courts have not been asked for accommodation in any other language. However, if this situation was to come up, the court staff would do their best to find a translator.

NEW COURTHOUSE
During the question and answer session the new Yolo County Superior Courthouse was mentioned and Julie noted that she hoped that the system for providing Assisted Listening might be a more up-todate version than the courts currently have. Clare Childers told Julie and Kara that input from the hearing impaired during the design and construction period is very important and she hopes that will occur. Julie promised to pass that on.

WE MUST SPEAK OUT
The importance of the hearing impaired speaking up in situations like this can not be overestimated. We need to let the people charged with providing us service know what works and does not work...it benefits all of society to have clear, effective communication available to all and there is no more important setting for this need than in a courtroom.

Both Kara and Julie showed their commitment to providing the people of Yolo County with excellent service by stating that if anyone is not sure how to go about requesting accommodations, or have issues with how their request is being handled, then they should feel free to contact either one of them directly. Tom broke the information down into four parts which he called "The Four Esssential Ingredients for a Successful Hearing Aid Fitting" They were:
The need to be a motivated and informed patient
The need to purchase the right technology
The need to find a competent and caring hearing provider
and
The need for a supportive family.

The part I personally found of most interest was FINDING THE RIGHT HEARING AID PROVIDER as Tom addressed issues that I would never have thought of. He recommended that you visit two to three different providers before making a decision on who to choose as your provider. He also said "DO NOT BRING YOUR WALLET OR CHECK BOOK" to this first visit; you are not there to buy anything, you are there to determine if this is the right place for you. He also strongly suggested that you bring along your significant other to these first visits as use of a hearing aid is designed to help you in communicating effectively with other people and the person most affected by your loss of hearing is your spouse and family. In order to determine which of the providers might work the best for you he suggested that you ask yourself these questions:

Were you given a hearing screening or full exam?

Were you given a full explanation of all the tests that were done?

Were you told what type of hearing loss you have and why you sometimes can "hear" but not "understand"?

Were you told what a hearing aid can and cannot do for you?

Were you asked about the effect of your hearing loss on your daily life at home, at work, in school etc?

Was your "significant other" given an opportunity to express the effect of your loss of hearing on them and your other loved ones?

After the meeting I feel far more confident about what I need to know and ask when purchasing a hearing aid.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8875963836446824047.post-26938119945611399432011-02-01T17:24:00.000-08:002011-02-01T17:24:42.594-08:00COMMUNITY GROUPS DONATE MONEY FOR PRESCHOOL HEARING TESTSHear! Here! wishes to thank the Kiwanis Club of Woodland, the Lions Clubs of Yolo County and the Woodland Healthcare Community Board for their generous donations towards the cost of the preschool hearing tests that we are in the process of scheduling.

Hear! Here! has no source of funding other than what it can raise itself and so without this community support our organization would not be able to provide this much needed service. Started in 2005 with a small donation and one volunteer, it is wonderful to see the program expand each year and the donations increase. Last year was the first time we were able to schedule testing in Davis and this year, thanks in large part to the very generous donation from the Lions Clubs, we are able to include all the preschools in both Winters and Esparto as well as many in Davis and as always Woodland. The van that does the testing has been contracted to visit Esparto, Winters and Woodland in late April. The Davis schedule and contract should soon be complete.

With support like this, our dream, that one day all the preschool children living in Yolo County are tested to ensure that they can hear well enough to understand their teacher, follow instructions, and interact with other children does not seem so unattainable!

Once again a big "thank you" to these great sponsors of the program.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8875963836446824047.post-52655289622347001072011-01-14T12:59:00.000-08:002011-01-14T12:59:19.025-08:00LIONS CLUBS RAISE MONEY FOR PRESCHOOL HEARING TESTSIn early December, the Lions Clubs of Woodland, Esparto and Winters held a raffle to raise money to help fund the hearing tests of preschool children that Hear! Here! organizes each year. The raffle raised just over $2900.00 and we were asked to use these funds to focus on the smaller communities of Winters, Madison, and Esparto. The Lions Clubs have ensured that children in these outlying areas will receive early screening for hearing loss. It is so important to catch any hearing impairment as early as possible so that children do not fall behind in their schooling. Thanks to all the Lions members who helped run the raffle and to those who purchased tickets.

This last week members of the board contacted the preschools in Winters and Esparto, all of whom are very interested in the screening, as well as a preschool in Woodland and also some Davis schools. Over the next two weeks the process of working out the possible scheduling of the tests will take place. Once the Center for Hearing Health of Auburn, CA confirms their routes the schools will be notified. Testing will happen sometime in the late spring.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
